To start of my production and research of what organic models I will be creating for my 3D literacy assignment. I decided on a rough idea of a few fruits I would want to work on, such as lemons, blueberries, strawberries, a banana and a pineapple and planned to gather the research I needed to help me model them.

I thought I would begin in just letting my creativity flow and I thought taking some primary images of fruit and in different arrangements would give me an idea of what would work as a design. Primary images and a range of tutorial videos on YouTube will hopefully provide me with a secure beginning to my 3D modelling and a good completion of this assignment.

In the assignment brief for 3D literacy, we were told that when we finished our models, we had to arrange our fruit in a final composition. My first idea was to have a little fun with the assignment and arrange the fruit into a character’s face and play around with a few styles. If I manage to arrange my fruit like this in the end of my assignment, will determine on if I stick with the fruit, I have plan to use or if I believe it is best suited to just do a classic fruit bowl arrangement.

So, for my first idea I arranged a face on my plate with banana slices for a smiling mouth, a halved strawberry, upside down for a nose and some small blueberries for some eyes. This is a quick and fun idea to create and taking photos of this and trailing the arrangement with real fruit gives me an idea of what the final 3D model may look like.

The next photo I had captured was a close up on the intricate textures within a banana and the different patterns and colours they have. I thought a couple of close ups of the fruit would give me a helping hand in creating the 3D models and although I plan to do a banana and part of it peeled, I could venture out and include a few slices of the banana.

The next close up of fruit I captured, includes a strawberry, a slice of banana and a small blue berry. In this close up I was able to see the way the seeds grew from the strawberry’s base and was able to see the colour difference from the bright red strawberry and how the seeds appeared slightly orange and brown.

Although the blueberry is not the third fruit I will be modelling, I wasn’t able to get any lemons, but taking different photos of different pieces of fruit shows the research I had gathered.

In order to give me a rough idea of what I can imagine my final 3D model to look like and whether or not the plan and design of the models will work. I thought sketching up a rough idea of the fruit on Procreate and adding in some helpful notes for myself, would allow me to push my ideas from my head, onto paper and give me a first-hand view if my plan will work. I drew up a full model of a lemon, a close up of a lemon slice and also drew the position of the two halves of the lemon, which is the final design I hope to create for my model. I think this is a good idea to begin for all my models, as it shows my process and how I went to thinking up my organic modelling designs to how they will be created and then work as a final 3D modelling piece.

The notes I had jotted down on the side, just to give myself some more information and a clear plan of action before modelling. Is what range of colour I had found within some reference photos of lemons and a couple of the colours I might use within my own lemon model. I think for the colours used with the lemon that my plan is to use basic images and colour to texture my model, however these final designs and colour could be applied within Substance Painter and give a little more realism to the model.

I also jotted down the ways I plan to model my lemon and present them with the final fruit bowl.

The next drawing, I designed was the strawberries and again I had followed the same steps as the lemon, by drawing up a couple of layouts and adding in some planning and colour ideas to give me an idea of the model I will be creating. My plan was to create an entire strawberry and position it within my fruit bowl, in a few bundles of three and I drew this up, with a couple of other designs.

I incorporated the other designs to again show variety within how I could create my model, with a close up on a single strawberry or model it along with the lemon and create a couple of slices of the strawberry.

The final drawings I had done was an incorporation of the banana I wanted to model and a drawing of the bowl/plate I image that I will model and have my fruit within. I drew up a couple of slices of banana and laid them out next to one another, a complete banana and a design of a banana half peeled, just how I plan to create the 3D model.

I included the plate as again to give me an idea of how my fruit will look when all the 3D models have been completed, if all goes the plan and the models look anything like my planning and designs. I’m sure the final outcome will be exactly what I imagined.

Taking the time to draw up these designs of the couple of fruits I will be modelling and the plate they will be placed within, helps me to vocalise my ideas and my brainstorm onto paper. It helps me to go into the modelling process just that little bit more prepared and shows I have a confidence within my idea’s final outcome and the research to back it up.
